The biggest exploit I could see here would be someone bringing a much larger army around to give themselves more time in the fight, so the formula could be adjusted to make more sense. Lastly, battles in real life happen in real time and the key to winning is often staying calm under pressure - such an option in this game would allow for the application of pressure. It's an option, so noone is trying to make your game into something you don't want - it's for those of us who might actually use it. Lastly, arguably the "ultimate" tbs is chess, and Chess has a timer as an option. Especially when, in one of those battles, the defender got caught slightly offguard and did nothing fo 5 minutes other than complain.

I can well understand the boredom when you aren't involved yourself. I once had a single turn last about 80 minutes because 2 players were fighting each other hard, and then a 3rd player pitched in at the end looking for easy loot. It's all part of the bigger discussion on what to do to make things flow better, as currently, you can be having a 2 minute map timer, then there's a huge battle that lasts 40 minutes, then it ends, and you have a few seconds to move your troops, and then there's another battle. Shaithias, the reasoning that leads to a strategic map timer is the same that leads to a tactical map mal, it's 5 turns.
